Oliver Jarvis powered to pole position for Mazda Team Joest ahead of Sunday's Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio, beating Penske's Helio Castroneves to the top spot.

Jarvis, piloting the #77 Mazda RT24-P, set a competitive and pacy 1m 10.075s lap in the dying stages of the session, improving on his previous provisional pole position run which knocked the #6 Acura of Dane Cameron from the top of the timesheets.

Running out of fuel, Jarvis slowed in his final run to the chequered flag, with this presenting Castroneves in the #7 Acura car one final shot to reclaim the fastest time after running at the top of the timesheets in the early stages of the session, despite making contact with Pipo Derani.

Failing to clip the apex in the penultimate corner, Castroneves failed to improve, with this handing Jarvis and Mazda pole position for the fourth race of the 2019 campaign.

With Castroneves setting the second-fasted time, 0.022s off the pace, the Brazilian racer fronted a 2-3 qualifying result for Acura Team Penske, with Cameron failing to emulate his pace from earlier in the session after briefly making contact with the #52 Oreca of Eric Lux.

Derani, who was the first man out of the pit lane for the session, was fourth fastest in the #31 Whelen Engineering Racing Cadilac while Joao Barbosa completed the top five in the #5 Mustang Sampling Racing entry.

In GTLM it was Sebastien Bourdais in the #66 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing entry who claimed pole, beating Porsche's Laurens Vanthoor to the top spot after being locked in a four-way manufacturer fight in the 15-minute session while BMW's Jesse Krohn was third, 15th overall.

Tommy Milner piloted the #4 Chevrolet Corvette CR.7 to fourth in-class while Ryan Briscoe completed the top five, heading Connor de Phillippi, Jan Magnussen and Patrick Pilet who completed the GTLM field in the #911 Porsche 911 RSR.

Richard Heistand took a maiden pole position in the #14 Lexus in GTD, with Ben Keating in the #33 Mercedes and Frank Montecalvo in the #12 Lexus completing the top three.

Coverage for the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio will commence on May 5 at 13:40 ET on IMSA TV.
