Bradley Smith declared fit to continue Jerez wildcard outing after heavy FP2 crash

Aprilia test rider and wildcard Bradley Smith has been passed fit by MotoGP medical staff, following a heavy highside late on in Spanish Grand Prix FP2.

Smith lost his full-time ride at KTM last year to former Tech3 man Johann Zarco at the end of last season, and took up a role with Aprilia as its official test rider.

The Briton made the first of his five wildcard appearances in 2019 in the Qatar opener in March, but didn't see the chequered flag after crashing at the first corner in the latter stages.

Upping the Aprilia presence to three bikes for the first European round of the year at Jerez, Smith was 19th and 1.5s off the pace at the end of first practice.

Avintia's Karel Abraham crashed at the Pons corner just in front of Smith in the closing stages of FP2, with the Aprilia rider's highside the result of him striking debris from the Czech rider's accident.

Both initially walked away from their crashes, while the session was halted to allow the marshals time to clear debris from the circuit.

Smith was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks, but a tweet from MotoGP's official Twitter feed confirmed the Aprilia wildcard had been declared fit to continue his weekend.

As well as his MotoGP wildcards with Aprilia, Smith will contest the inaugural MotoE World Cup with the Sepang International Circuit team – running under the One Energy Racing banner.

The first round of the series was due to coincide with this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, but a devastating fire which destroyed all 18 Energica Ego machines during a pre-season test at Jerez last month forced the season-opener to be rescheduled.

A revised five-round series will begin instead during the German Grand Prix weekend at the Sachsenring at the start of July.

Tech3 rider Hafizh Syahrin had been taken to the medical centre earlier in FP2 when he crashed his KTM at Peluqui. He too escaped injury.
