Williams has confirmed that Robert Kubica will start Formula 1’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the pit lane in the wake of his qualifying crash.

Kubica clipped the inside wall at Turn 8 and the trajectory sent him heavily into the barriers on the outside of the corner, causing substantial damage to the front-right of the FW42.

Kubica was poised to line up from 19th on the grid but will instead take the start from the pit lane.

Williams has taken the decision in order to make several set-up changes that are not permitted under parc ferme regulations.

“Everything can happen [in Baku] and it does,” said Kubica.

“It is these kinds of grands prix where you have to make sure you finish.

“With many safety cars and many accidents you have to be there but also you have to be a bit lucky as well.

“It is definitely a track where a lot of things happen, and we have seen it also unfortunately with me in qualifying.”

Kubica will be joined in starting from the pit lane by Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly, after the youngster missed the weighbridge during Friday’s second practice session.
