The Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course may be in the NASCAR Xfinity Series' future. NASCAR plans to test that possibility in June, according to reports from TheRacingInsiders.com and ApexOff.com, both citing veteran IndyCar reporter Robin Miller as the source of information. NASCAR, though, is remaining mum on the reported test session.
Both NASCAR's Xfinity and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series race on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval course yearly, with the Xifnity Series running a companion race to the Cup Series' Brickyard 400. But that hasn't always been the case. Prior to 2012, the Xfinity Series ran its yearly Indianapolis race across town at the Indianapolis Raceway Park (since going by monikers like O'Reilly Raceway Park and Lucas Oil Raceway) short track.
The Xfinity Series already races at four road courses yearly, including the Charlotte Motor Speedway "Roval" that debuted in 2018, Road America, Watkins Glen International and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Park. The Watkins Glen and Charlotte "Roval" races are companion events to Cup Series races, while the races at Road America and Mid-Ohio are NASCAR stand-alone events.
The 2020 schedule for the NASCAR Xfinity Series already has been released, and the July 4, 2020, race at IMS is expected to be contested on the oval. But another overhaul of NASCAR's national series schedules is expected ahead of the 2021 season.
