Renault-powered cars to run upgraded MGU-K after issues

Nico Hulkenberg has confirmed that all Renault-powered Formula 1 cars will run an upgraded MGU-K during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, in the hope of getting on top of some of the reliability issues which have struck both Renault and McLaren.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz was forced to retire from the Australian GP after his MGU-K failed, meanwhile both Renault cars retired in Bahrain with power unit related problems – though the exact cause hasn't been confirmed.

However Hulkenberg hinted that it might have been MGU-K related too, confirming all four cars would be running the upgraded component.

"Since the beginning of the season there has been several other issues on the MGU-K side," he said on Thursday.

"For here all the Renault engines, we’re on the redesigned MGU-K where we’re very confident that it’s taken care of all the issues we’ve seen. There’s further, ongoing work obviously to improve things."

The German will take on a new engine for the weekend too, confirming it will be an entirely new unit.

Sainz moved to the upgraded unit in Bahrain after his opening-race failure, which means all four cars are now on their second of three allowed MGU-K's for the entire season.
