Nick Craw, president of the FIA’s senate, made a visit to the site of the 2012 Austin Grand Prix this week to inspect preparations for Formula One’s return to the USA.
Craw immediately applauded the setting for the proposed track, claiming, ‘it’ll be great.’
“This has some of the most interesting, exciting and different features, drawn from other successful venues around the world,” he added in regards to the design.
Meanwhile, he met with several members involved in the project including, Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Peter Wahl, the managing partner of Tilke GmbH, the architect company headed by renowned track designer Hermann Tilke.
Wahl is hoping the design, which features several elevation changes, will force the drivers into making errors, in the hope it will keep the spectators entertained.
“The track design has been developed with the drivers and spectators in mind,” said Wahl. “The drivers want to have high-speed corners; that’s what they like.
“We want to force them to make faults and errors; otherwise, the race is not interesting for the spectator. When we design a racing experience, we must consider both points of view to have a truly successful event.”
