Brad Binder set a new all-time lap record around the Barcelona circuit to top the second practice session of the Catalan MotoGP round.
The South African’s time of 1:38.141 proved to be the fastest ever lap around the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit as he bested team-mate Pedro Acosta to top spot.
Crashes for Johann Zarco and Enea Bastianini at Turn 2 brought a premature end to most of the riders’ session, confirming Binder as the fastest rider of timed practice.
Acosta was 0.104s off Binder’s time in second, while Alex Marquez completed the top three.
Marc Marquez was unable to improve on his first lap with the soft tyre and could only manage fourth, as Marco Bezzecchi ended the session in fifth.
Bastianini was sixth at the flag despite his late crash ahead of Franco Morbidelli and fellow crasher Zarco, who set identical lap times in seventh and eighth.
Luca Marini finished Friday practice in ninth, whilst Ai Ogura stole the final automatic Q2 spot in 10th.
Fabio Quartararo narrowly missed out on the top 10, 0.003s behind Ogura’s time, as Miguel Oliveira crossed the line in 12th.
Joan Mir concluded the day’s action in 13th ahead of rookie Fermin Aldeguer in 14th and Jack Miller in 15th.
Alex Rins’ best time was only good enough for 16th as he took the flag ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio.
World Champion Jorge Martin was unable to show his one-lap pace as he completed the session in 18th, with Raul Fernandez in 19th and Honda wildcard Aleix Espargaro taking 20th.
Francesco Bagnaia’s misery continued as he was only able to finish 21st ahead of Aprilia wildcard Lorenzo Savadori.
Maverick Vinales continued to struggle with shoulder pain in 23rd, while the returning Somkiat Chantra completed the standings in 24th.
