Envision Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird has been stripped of his Hong Kong EPrix victory with the addition of a five-second time penalty, dropping him to sixth place.
Second-placed Edoardo Mortara, therefore, inherits his maiden Formula E victory with Venturi.
Bird, who started seventh, passed several cars during the opening lap to eventually move into second place and then took the lead of the race after Oliver Rowland suffered a loss of power.
Bird then made a small error allowing Techeetah’s Andre Lotterer through, but remained close in the closing laps before making brief contact with Lotterer’s right-rear tyre which caused a puncture, allowing Bird to retake the lead and the chequered flag.
Although claiming the victory, race stewards immediately announced the contact would be investigated and following lengthy deliberations, the British driver was handed a five-second time penalty, which drops him to sixth.
Lucas di Grassi moves up to second ahead of Robin Frijns, Daniel Abt and Felipe Massa.
