Jenson Button says the Korean GP in a fortnights time will be do or die for the McLaren outfits title chances.
Both drivers dropped further down the championship standings on Sunday, after a dominant performance from Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
Button currently lies fifth with a 31 point deficit to Webber. The Brit believes McLaren must win in Korea of it’ll be ‘almost impossible’ to take the title.
“It’s a lot more difficult for us now,” said the McLaren driver. “If we don’t have the legs on the Red Bulls in Korea it will be almost impossible.”
The reigning world champion says he is impressed with the teams efforts to bring new updates to the car, but admitted they hadn’t improved the pace to put them in a position to challenge.
“There are so many cars fighting at the front and we’re at the back. We couldn’t be trying harder. I’ve never seen so many new parts put on a car each race but we are not quick enough.”
Meanwhile, Button is hoping he can draw parallels to Kimi Raikkonen’s 2007 title win in which he almost looked out of the title fight with a few races remaining, before mistakes from Hamilton and Alonso saw the Finn clinch it by just a single point.
“Stranger things have happened, of course. When Kimi Raikkonen won the Championship, Lewis looked like he was going to walk it. He only needed something like two points from two races.
“So it can turn around, but I’d like to be in a position where I didn’t need the Red Bulls to crash or have reliability issues, because if we carry on like this they will cruise it.”
