Force India sees ‘huge potential’ in Lance Stroll – Otmar Szafnauer

Lance Stroll arrives at Force India with “huge potential”, according to Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer.

Stroll’s long-anticipated switch from Williams to the operation that was taken over by his father mid-season was finally confirmed on Friday, with the Canadian joining as part of a long-term deal.

Stroll, 20, took a podium in his rookie campaign in 2017 – having stepped up to Formula 1 as the reigning European Formula 3 champion – but spent much of 2018 at the back amid Williams’ woes.

Stroll tested for Force India during post-season running, completing one-and-a-half days in the VJM11 at the Yas Marina Circuit, and will link up with stalwart Sergio Perez at the team.

“I’m pleased that we can finally confirm Lance’s arrival to race alongside Sergio next year,” said Szafnauer.

“It gives us an exciting line-up with the perfect blend of youth, talent, and experience.

“Lance is only 20 and already has two years of Formula 1 experience under his belt, as well as a podium finish and a front row start.

“We see huge potential in Lance and believe we can create an environment in which he can flourish.

“Our team has enjoyed great success nurturing and developing young and talented drivers, and we are very excited to begin our journey with Lance.”

Stroll’s appointment leaves Esteban Ocon without a seat on the 2019 grid.

Ocon’s departure has been expected since the mid-season takeover and the Frenchman has already taken up a reserve role with long-term backer Mercedes.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Esteban for his contribution to the team over the last two seasons and wish him well for the future,” added Szafnauer.
