Antonio Fuoco heads Ferrari 1-2-3 at Spa qualifying for 6 hour race

Antonio Fuoco took pole in the #50 Ferrari, with the Italian setting a 1:59.617 to go quickest.

He headed up a Ferrari 1-2-3, with his teammates Robert Kubica and Antonio Giovinazzi second and third, giving Ferrari a front row lock out.

In the initial 15 minute qualifying session to decide the top 10, the three Ferraris, two Peugeots, both Cadillacs and both Alpines, plus the #20 BMW of Robin Frijns got through into Hyperpole. 

The Ferraris were quick all session, with Fuoco sitting atop the timing for most of the 15 minutes. Jean-Eric Vergne confirmed Peugeot’s pace from the free practice sessions, taking second. He was initially just a few hundredths off Fuoco, but the Italian produced another lap to go well over three tenths quicker than the Frenchman.

With the 10 cars that got through, this eliminated the eight cars who were not quick enough to make it into Hyperpole. Surprisingly both Porsche, #5 and #6, and the #7 and #8 Toyotas could not make it through. The other cars that went out included the #15 BMW of Raffaelle Marciello, who was knocked out by less than half a tenth.

The two Aston Martins, meanwhile, did not make it through, continuing a trend from Qatar and Imola. Finally, the #99 Proton Porsche of Nico Varrone also did not get through.

Ferrari reign supreme in Hyperpole

Like in qualifying, it took a few laps for the drivers to get the tyres up to temperature, even with high temperatures this weekend at Spa.

The first representative laps were set by Robert Kubica, in the #83 AF Corse Ferrari, and Frijns in the #20 BMW. Kubica was the first driver into the 1:59s, with a 1:59.964, with Frijns a few tenths off the Pole.

However, Fuoco beat them all with a 1:59.617, three and half tenths faster than Kubica.

These two laps were the best Fuoco and Kubica could manage, with Fuoco taking pole again. In third was the other factory Ferrari, the #51 of Antonio Giovinazzi, almost six tenths off Fuoco.

So, with a Ferrari 1-2-3, Stoffel Vandoorne was third in the #94 Peugeot 9X8, with a 2:00.218. Fifth was Alex Lynn in the #38 Cadillac V-Series.R, a few hundredths off Vandoorne, while Mick Schumacher took sixth in the #36 Alpine.

Seventh was the sister Peugeot, the #93 driven by Jean-Eric Vergne. Robin Frijns took Hyperpole’s lone #20 BMW to eighth, with ninth going to the #35 Alpine of Charles Milesi. The top 10 was rounded out by Earl Bamber in the #38 Cadillac.
