McLaren rules out full-time 2019 IndyCar entry, 500 run still possible

McLaren boss Zak Brown says the operation is not yet ready to commit to a full-time IndyCar programme in 2019, but remains open to an Indianapolis 500 entry.

McLaren competed in IndyCar in 2017 by linking up with Andretti and Honda to field a car for Fernando Alonso at the Indianapolis 500.

Alonso’s presence attracted huge attention as he ran competitively, spending several stints in the lead of the race, before he retired due to an engine failure.

Alonso announced in August that he would not compete in Formula 1 next year and shortly after tested for Andretti at the Barber road course, fuelling speculation of a potential move into IndyCar with McLaren.

But such plans failed to gather momentum in the weeks since and on Friday Brown revealed that McLaren will not participate full-time in the series next year.

Brown nonetheless added that it could still compete at the Indianapolis 500 – which is the remaining event in Alonso’s quest to secure motorsport’s Triple Crown.

Alonso has yet to reveal any details of his potential 2019 race programme outside of his duties with Toyota in the World Endurance Championship’s ‘Super Season’, which concludes with next year’s Le Mans 24 Hours.
