Fernando Alonso expects ‘more interesting’ F1 in 2021

Fernando Alonso believes Formula 1 will be in a “much better” state if planned widespread changes are introduced for the 2021 season.

Alonso, who will exit the championship at the end of the campaign, has repeatedly railed against the current formula, with what he perceives as its predictability a primary bugbear.

Formula 1 is set for an overhaul for 2021, with revised technical and sporting regulations – as well as commercial tweaks – that have yet to be exactly defined.

“I think you need to make the sport interesting again,” said Alonso.

“I posted a video of 2005 [Japanese GP] and I received 3000 comments of ‘this is the F1 I fell in love with’ and not the thing you have now.

“It’s not me being critical with this Formula 1, it’s the whole world looking at this Formula 1.

“One of the top six cars, they can start last in every race and they will finish in the top six and they will lap the seventh with whatever you guy you put in those cars.

“We miss the noise of the V10s, the V8, we miss the creativity on the strategy, the different fuel loads, the tyre competition.

“Maybe in the wet, the Bridgestone they are mega, maybe in the dry the Michelin are mega.

“You go into Sunday with some unpredictable feeling with what’s going to happen in the race.

“I think by 2021, most of the changes I guess, FOM is thinking about is to get back to a more interesting F1 and I am sure the sport will be much better at that time.

“I think for next year it’s going to be difficult for the changes are just minor on the front wing and things like that – I don’t think it’s going to be a big impact but on the future.

“I think it’s going to be OK because Liberty and these guys, they have the same vision and they know that they have to do something.”
