A five-round calendar has been announced by the FIM and Dorna for the inaugural MotoE World Cup, which is due to kick off next year during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend on May 5.

The fully electric MotoE World Cup series was officially launched at an event earlier in the year, and has been in the works by Dorna and the FIM for some time.

Billed as the first steps in developing a sustainable all-electric motorcycle championship, MotoE is being run in conjunction with MotoGP to boost its exposure.

The calendar for the inaugural season in 2019 will consist of five events in Europe, beginning at Jerez on May 5 before moving to Le Mans in France two weeks later.

The third round will be staged at the Sachsenring in Germany prior to the summer break on July 7, with Austria on August 11 and Misano on September 15 bringing the season to a close.

Each race will be run over seven to 10 laps, based on circuit length, with the first riders to be announced during the Aragon round in two weeks' time.

All satellite teams on the current premier class grid will field two riders, while the SIC, Marc VDS, Ajo, Pons, Intact Moto2 teams, as well as the SIC58 Moto3 outfit, will run one bike each.

All teams will run the race version of the Energica Ego Corsa, which will produce up to 120kw of power with a top speed of up to 270km/h.

The road version of the Energica Ego has been demonstrated to the public during each race weekend this year, with past riders completing laps.

The first test for the series will take place this year from November 23 to 25 at Jerez, with two more tests scheduled for mid-March and late-April of next year at the same circuit.

Earlier this weekend, newly-signed Aprilia test rider Bradley Smith confirmed he was weighing up the possibility of racing in the MotoE World Cup
