Pedro Piquet battled hard throughout with Trident team-mate Giuliano Alesi to win GP3's Sprint Race at Monza in a thrilling affair.

Both Trident drivers launched ahead of MP Motorsport's Richard Verschoor as the lights went out and went straight to battle.

The Trident pair slipstreamed each other on the opening lap before the Safety Car was called to clear up the wreckage of the Jenzer and Arden of Juan Manuel Correa and Gabriel Aubry, who came together along the Serraglio straight.

Once the safety car pulled back into the pits Piquet led Alesi, with their fathers Nelson and Jean nervously watching on from the pit wall, but Alesi eventually locked up into the Rettifilo Chicane, allowing Piquet a run.

Piquet duly sealed the lead into the Roggia Chicane and was never headed thereafter, going on to record victory, with Alesi completing a Trident 1-2 on home ground for the team.

Callum Ilott made it a double Ferrari academy podium with Alesi after managing to pass ART team-mate and title rival Anthoine Hubert in the final laps of the race.

Hubert's degrading rear tyres left him vulnerable to the British driver in the closing laps of the race and he had to settle for fourth place, though lost little ground to Ilott in the standings.

Nikita Mazepin crossed the line in fifth place for ART after having an eventful race with numerous trips across the escape roads.

Jake Hughes pulled off a stunning move around the outside of the feature race winner David Beckmann at the Della Roggia chicane in the final laps of the race to finish sixth, with the German following close behind in seventh.

Tatiana Calderon continued to show her late-season form after putting on a storming charge through the field to finish eighth and take the final point of the morning's race; she started 15th on the grid after falling away in the latter stages of Saturday's Feature Race.

Campos pair Leonardo Pulcini and Simo Laaksonen rounded out the top 10.

GP3 will head to Russia for the penultimate weekend of the season on 29-30 September.
