Team Penske Chevrolet's Will Power soared to a fourth pole position of 2018 at Portland International Raceway, beating team-mate and reigning IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden to the top spot.
Power, who secured his 54th career pole position for the penultimate round of the 2018 season, set a 57.3467s lap in Q3, beating Newgarden to pole by 0.3410s while Alexander Rossi completed the top three, only 0.0484s adrift of Newgarden.
After topping final practice ahead of qualifying despite suffering a 130mph off to cause a red flag, Sebastien Bourdais secured fourth on the grid for Sunday's race, qualifying ahead of the Andretti Autosport pair of Ryan Hunter-Reay and Zach Veach who secured in fifth and sixth on the grid respectively.
Despite only completing three tours of the circuit and propping up the timesheets in practice three, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports' James Hinchcliffe qualified in seventh place while Ed Jones secured eighth on the grid as the highest-placed Chip Ganassi Racing driver.
Marco Andretti was the lowest-placed Andretti Autosport driver after qualifying in 10th while Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing's Graham Rahal failed to emulate his pace from earlier on in the day, completing the top 10 in qualifying.
Championship leader Scott Dixon only managed 11th on the grid for the Grand Prix of Portland and will start alongside series rookie, Jordan King who qualified in 12th place.
Britain's Jack Harvey will start from 13th on the grid after failing to make it out of Q1 Group 1 while Carlos Munoz, who stands in this weekend for the injured Robert Wickens, qualified in 14th place.
Max Chilton secured 15th on the grid for Carlin and was followed by Pietro Fittipaldi, Spencer Pigot, Santino Ferrucci, Matheus Leist and Takuma Sato who completed the top 20.
Gabby Chaves secured 21st on the grid while Simon Pagenaud only managed to qualify in 22nd place for Team Penske. Alfonso Celis Jr followed Pagenaud in 23rd while Tony Kanaan and Charlie Kimball completed the field.
