Mercedes, F1 delight in 2019 German GP agreement

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says the manufacturer did “everything in our power” to keep the German Grand Prix on the calendar, following the release of the provisional 2019 schedule.

The future of the German Grand Prix appeared uncertain following the conclusion of the 10-year biennial deal between Hockenheim and Nurburgring, which the latter reneged in 2015 and 2017.

Hockenheim hosted this year’s German Grand Prix in July and circuit chiefs remained optimistic that it would not be Formula 1’s final visit to the venue.

On Friday it was confirmed that the German Grand Prix will again be held at Hockenheim next season, with the event included on the draft 2019 calendar.

Mercedes-Benz, which already has a strong presence at the circuit, will act as the title sponsor.

“This year’s Grand Prix in Hockenheim was a demonstration of the enthusiasm that Formula 1 generates in Germany,” said Wolff.

“It was therefore important for us to do everything in our power to ensure that our home race will take place again next year.

“Together with Formula 1 and all the relevant stakeholders, we have found a way to make it happen.

“We are delighted that Mercedes-Benz will also be the title sponsor of the German Grand Prix next year.”

Formula 1 CEO and Chairman Chase Carey welcomed the development.

“With the very valuable help of Mercedes-Benz, the German automobile clubs ADAC and AvD and the German Minister for Transportation and Digital Infrastructure, we have reached an agreement,” he said.

“This will allow us to once more race at this iconic circuit also in 2019.

“This demonstrates how all stakeholders within Formula 1 are working together to ensure the long-term future of the sport and its fans.”
