McLaren-backed youngster Nyck de Vries claimed his maiden Formula 2 pole position with a commanding lap at Spa-Francorchamps.
De Vries’ first effort was deleted for exceeding track limits through Raidillon and he opted to run during the traditional quiet phase of the session.
De Vries utilised such a tactic to great effect by clocking a time of 1:56.054, leaving him almost half a second clear of erstwhile pole sitter George Russell.
De Vries’ rivals ran once more but no-one could get near the Dutchman’s time, with Russell emerging as his nearest competitor, albeit 0.403s adrift.
Carlin’s Sergio Sette Camara was third, ahead of Luca Ghiotto and McLaren reserve Lando Norris, who stopped on track during the final minute.
Alexander Albon was sixth for DAMS, in front of Charouz pair Antonio Fuoco and Louis Deletraz, the duo sandwiching Arden’s Nirei Fukuzumi.
Renault development driver Artem Markelov rounded out the top 10 for Russian Time.
