Tom Luthi to return to Moto2 in 2019 with Intact GP

Tom Luthi will return to the Moto2 class next season with the Intact GP team, after just a single season in MotoGP with Marc VDS.

2017 Moto2 runner-up Luthi made his premier class debut at the start of this season with Marc VDS on a year-old Honda, but has found the transition difficult.

The Swiss rider is yet to score points, and has a best finish of 16th, while teammate Franco Morbidelli has made seven top 15 appearances this year.

With internal troubles forcing Marc VDS to step away from the top class at the end of this season, Luthi's place in MotoGP looked in doubt, and he confirmed he was considering options for a Moto2 return.

“MotoGP is still a dream come true for me – but circumstances have not made it easy for me in recent months,” Luthi said.

“Now I am very happy that such a great door has opened for the next years. Dynavolt Intact GP is a strong, safe and well-organised team in which top performances are possible.

“I am looking forward to this next chapter and with the support of my partners, fans and family I am looking forward to give it all again next year in Moto2.

“My dream continues – and now I am once again fully focused on the second half of my MotoGP season.”

Luthi, who raced in Moto2 since its inception in 2010 and scored 11 wins, will join Marcel Schrotter next year, while Xavi Vierge – who is absent from Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix due to injury – is expected to switch to Marc VDS in place of the Suzuki MotoGP-bound Joan Mir.

The Swiss rider's current teammate Morbidelli will switch to the incoming Petronas Yamaha satellite team next year alongside Barcelona Moto2 race winner Fabio Quartararo, with an official announcement expected at the British Grand Prix in two weeks.
