Valentino Rossi's half brother Luca Marini stormed to his maiden Moto2 pole for the Czech Grand Prix, with Alex Marquez second quickest.

In typical Moto2 fashion, the opening of the 45-minute session was a frantic affair, with top spot changing hands a number of times.

Italtrans' Mattia Pasini demoted early pacesetter Miguel Oliveira on his Ajo KTM with a 2:02.417s, while championship leader Francesco Bagnaia slotted into third, just under three hundredths adrift off the pace.

Marcel Schrotter pushed Bagnaia back to fourth when he fired in a 2:02.449s, though both were shuffled back a further place when Marquez leaped up to top spot with a 2:02.359s.

Trailing his Sky VR46 teammate Bagnaia, Marini went 0.115s clear of the field with a 2:02.244s, with Oliveira improving to fourth.

Times at the top half of the timesheets remained stagnant as the session drew to a close, but no one put Marini's time under threat, giving the Italian his maiden pole position in the Moto2 class.

Marquez held onto second on his Marc VDS Kalex, while Pasini completed the front row. MotoGP-bound Oliveira registered his first top five qualifying result since the season-opening Qatar race in fourth.

Schrotter will launch from fifth on the grid as he seeks his maiden Moto2 poidum, while Bagnaia's points lead defence will begin from sixth.

Brad Binder's closing laps suggested a potential jump up the order, but remained seventh in the end ahead of Xavi Vierge and Dominique Aegerter.

Lorenzo Baldassarri completed the top 10 despite crashing with 17 minutes remaining. The extreme temperatures meant improvements were few and far between, ensuring the Pons rider's top 10 starting position remained intact.
