Lucas Di Grassi wins in New York, Jean-Eric Vergne clinches season 4 title

Jean-Eric Vergne sealed the 2017/18 Formula E title with a fifth-placed finish in the penultimate race of the season in New York, as outgoing champion Lucas di Grassi led an Audi 1-2.

Di Grassi powered his way through the field, leading home team-mate Daniel Abt, having aggressively overhauled the German following the mandatory pit stop phase, causing friction over the radio waves.

Abt attempted to fight back against the 2016/17 champion but Audi appeared to issue team orders, ending the brief battle between the pair.

Renault's Sebastien Buemi started from pole position but was unable to keep pace with the Audi drivers and had to settle for the bottom step of the podium.

Venturi's Tom Dillmann stormed to a fantastic fourth, in place of DTM-bound Edoardo Mortaral the Frenchman did run as high as third in the race, but with little practice to get acclimatised to the car he eventually had to settle for a spot just off the podium.

Having been removed from the qualifying results after a coding change, Techeetah had to revert to their settings from Zurich; Vergne was able to clinch fifth place after effectively working his way through the field from 19th on the grid.

Sole title rival Sam Bird also made progress from 14th on the grid but was only able to reach ninth; this, combined with Vergne's fifth, ensured the ex-Toro Rosso F1 driver sealed the 2017/18 crown.

Nick Heidfeld salvaged sixth position for Mahindra, having overhauled Vergne's Techeetah team-mate Andre Lotterer late on, following a Safety Car period to retrieve the stricken DS Virgin Racing car of Alex Lynn, who crashed heavily through Turn 5.

Maro Engel held on to eighth place to secure a double points finish for Venturi, the first race at the helm for new team boss Susie Wolff.

Renault's Nico Prost ran behind Buemi in the opening stages of the race but lacked the race pace necessary to keep up with his Swiss team-mate and gradually drifted down the pack to round out the top 10 at the chequered flag.

Front-row starter Mitch Evans pulled off the circuit just as the lights went out due to a suspected driveshaft failure.

NIO's Oliver Turvey was a non-starter after sustaining a hand fracture in a practice crash and he will be replaced by Ma Qing Hua for Sunday's final race.

Sunday will witness the final race of season 4 and the current generation of rules in Formula E and will also decide the Constructors' Championship with Techeetah holding a slim six-point advantage over Audi.
