Techeetah ‘as prepared as they can be’ for title showdown

Formula E's only real customer team, Techeetah, currently leads both the drivers' and manufacturers' championships as the series heads into its final race weekend, a double-header showdown on the streets of New York, with the Manhattan skyline providing the perfect backdrop for what will surely be a dramatic duo of races.

Techeetah, led by team principal Mark Preston, holds a 33-point advantage over automotive giant Audi, each with three wins apiece this season. Meanwhile Jean-Eric Vergne holds a small 23-point lead over DS Virgin Racing's Sam Bird, and that means everything's to play for this weekend.

Team boss Preston, speaking exclusively to our sister publication Motorsport Monday, says his outfit are as prepared as they can be for the weekend and now it's down to the "Formula E Gods".

"I think we’ve done as much as we possibly can in terms of preparation," he said. "The drivers have been on the simulators, everyone will be taking a small rest, I hope, before they go out to the track, although I’m sure the engineers will be working furiously in the background to make everything perfect.

"In terms of preparation, I don’t think we could do much more and we’re just going to have to see.

"As I say, the Formula E Gods seem to be something that are thrown in your way or something random happens and then it can all go out of the window but we’re as prepared as I think we can be."

With Bird and Audi breathing down their necks, Preston says it's paramount – if they can't win – they finish as close as possible to them to ensure success.

"Sam and then the two Audis are the main things to keep an eye on so I think really, we just need to race with those three guys and if both of our guys, our drivers, are with those three then theoretically we’ve got a good chance of winning both [championships].

"I think, specifically, with JEV because he’s still 23 points ahead, then really he just has to match Sam from that point of view. It’s almost like a match race in a way!

"But the Audis, if they’re quicker then we’ll obviously have to stay as close as we can to them and minimise any impact, if they turn out to be the quickest car there but, you know, based on the last few races, actually, all the way back to maybe Punta [del Este], they’ve always been up there so, therefore, it’s going to be a matter of both drivers keeping with those two and Sam is probably going to be in the mix as well.

"I think it’s just go on as normal, try to be in the top five in Super Pole and race and from there and basically have as clean a race as possible with both drivers."

Mark Preston writes a column in Motorsport Monday and will be back with his latest instalment following the conclusion of what's set to be a very exciting weekend of motorsport.
