Renault set for front wing upgrade in Germany

Renault is set to introduce a new front wing for its R.S.18 at next weekend’s German Grand Prix as it bids to consolidate fourth place in Formula 1’s Constructors’ Championship.

Renault has largely continued on its upwards trajectory in the third year of its comeback as a works team and has scored points at all bar one Grand Prix to already exceed its 2017 total.

Renault currently holds a 19-point advantage over Haas in the scrap for midfield honours, with Force India and McLaren close behind.

The new component is set to be run for the first time on Friday at Hockenheim, as Renault attempts to pull clear of its rivals in the scrap for fourth.

Renault’s Chassis Technical Director Nick Chester said: “It’ll look a bit different, a bit different on the cone area and flap area.

“It’ll have slightly different characteristics, it will change the bias in corner entry in medium- and high-speed corners, so it’s an interesting test for us.

“Hopefully it’ll bring a bit of performance to the car, often when you change front wing characteristics you can’t be sure before you test it.”

Chester added that it is likely to be Renault’s final major revision to the front end of its car before revised regulations come into force next season.

“It’s probably [the final 2018 front update] just because of the lead time,” he said.

“By the time you develop it and build it it’ll be late in the year.

“There may be tweaks, but tweaks as opposed to a brand new wing.”
