The ABB FIA Formula E Championship has been awarded ISO 20121 certification for its practices of sustainability, becoming the first category of motorsport to achieve such a feat.
Formula E is motorsport's premier electric racing series which has an emission-free outlook on racing whilst also providing manufacturers with a platform to test and develop technologies that can be used on the road.
The ISO 20121 was created following the 2012 Olympic Games held in London, encouraging events to introduce a management system that follows three targets: growth in social responsibility, the creation of a successful financial model for growth and the reduction of the environmental footprint of events.
Having one of the lowest carbon footprints in international sporting events, Formula E's positive impact on the environment will increase in the future through the introduction of a waste management scheme whilst continuing to source sustainable suppliers to add to community engagement.

"The achievement is a testament to our entire ecosystem working towards a common goal of continuously improving our sustainability credentials and working with our supply chain at events to inspire others to make a conscious effort in minimising the impact on the environment.

Other events that have achieved ISO 20121 certification include the French Open, 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 2016 UEFA European Championships.
Formula E's fourth season of competition will come to a close this weekend with the double-header New York City E-Prix where both a new Drivers' and Teams' Champion will be crowned.
