Callum Ilott dominates feature race as title rivals collide

Ferrari-backed Callum Ilott secured his second straight GP3 victory and moved to the lead of the standings as erstwhile title leaders Anthoine Hubert and Nikita Mazpin collided.

The British driver powered his way to victory with a pace which none of his rivals could match throughout the race and was managed with ease as they came towards the chequered flag.

Plenty of battles ensued behind Ilott but it was Leonardo Pulcini in the Campos who was able to come through to clinch second place ahead of the Trident of Alessio Lorandi, who is still carrying a shoulder injury, to round off the podium.

Pedro Piquet came very close to tagging Lorandi into Turn 3 trying to overtake the Italian driver, but he was able to utilise the run-off area and come back onto the race track but had to settle for fourth place.

Jake Hughes looked to have initial pace early on in the race but as the tyres began to degrade, he was unable to hold on finishing in fifth-place and securing some much-needed points.

The two other Tridents of Giuliano Alesi and Ryan Tveter also did battle in the latter stages of the race, they fought hard but it was the Frenchman who came out on top crossing the line in sixth ahead of his American team-mate.

Jenzer's David Beckmann fought hard with his own team-mate Juan Manuel Correa and was pushed onto the grass at one point, an eighth-place finish for the German will see him start the sprint race on pole position.

Simo Laaksonen impressed as he was well inside the top ten throughout the race but as the tyres began to suffer in the latter stages the Finn dropped back but was able to settle for ninth-place.

After a terrible qualifying session, MP Motorsport's Dorian Boccalacci was able to snatch tenth-place and the final point away from team-mate Niko Kari in the dying laps of the race.

The two ARTs of Mazepin and Hubert clashed going into the Jochen Rindt curve causing the Russian some suspension damage, but still managed to finish in 13th while Hubert was left in the middle of the track. The Frenchman was able to resume but was left down in 17th place.

Their clash means Ilott takes the lead of the drivers' standings on 65 points, just two ahead of Hubert.
