Callum Ilott beat ART team-mate Jake Hughes to GP3 pole position in Austria, as championship leader Anthoine Hubert had a disastrous session.
Ilott held provisional pole position during the early stages of the session and improved on his benchmark time, only to be demoted by both Nikita Mazepin and Hughes.
But Ilott responded by clocking a time of 1:19.209 to edge his compatriot by just 0.037s, following up his maiden victory in the series at last weekend’s Paul Ricard round with his first pole.
Ilott’s lap came shortly before Hubert brought the session to a premature conclusion when he crawled to a halt as he rounded Turn 5.
Hubert, who holds a 14-point title lead over Mazepin, earlier went wide as he exited the final corner, and plunged down to 19th in the order by the time his car came to a stop.
Alessio Lorandi and Leonardo Pulcini squeezed in-between ART’s lead trio to claim third and fourth respectively, relegating Mazepin to fifth, while Pedro Piquet was sixth.
Dorian Boccolacci, Ryan Tveter, Gabriel Aubry and Giuliano Alesi rounded out the top 10.
