FIA adds third DRS zone for Austrian GP

This weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix is to feature three DRS zones, the third time this season Formula 1 has implemented the move, according to Race Director Charlie Whiting.

DRS, introduced in 2011, has typically been used at two sections of a circuit, with drivers permitted free use in qualifying, and once within a second of a rival in race trim.

The FIA has evaluated the use of DRS at several events this year and opted to add a third zone in both Australia and Canada – albeit with little in the way of overtaking.

Austria’s Red Bull Ring, which returned to the calendar in 2014, has previously featured two DRS zones, one along the pit straight, and another located at the top of the circuit between Turns 3 and 4.
