Crashes dominate red-flagged Le Mans Q2; Fernando Alonso quickest

The second qualifying session for the 24 Hours of Le Mans was filled with crashes and ended prematurely when a red-flag was called for Giorgio Sernagiotto in the #47 Cetilar Villorba Corse Dallara P217 Gibson.

The clock was stopped with just over 30 minutes left as Sernagiotto impacted the barriers heavily at the first chicane, but walked away unscathed.

"I'm fine. The rupture of the right suspension made the car take off at 320km/h. Now let's hope we can fix the car", he posted on social media after.

It was one of many red flags as the session saw multiple crashes including a ten-minute stoppage for Nico Lapierre in the Signatech Alpine A470 Gibson after he skated through the gravel trap.

Meanwhile Sven Mueller ran into the tyre wall in his Porsche whilst Andy Priaulx span and rear-ended the tyre wall in his Ford GT.

The #7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid driven by Mike Conway, which ended up second quickest, locked-up at the Dunlop Chicane and went straight on through the gravel, but managed to recover.

The session was once again topped by the sister Toyota car driven by Fernando Alonso, with his time of 3:18.021, which was just under a second slower than Kazuki Nakajima managed on Wednesday to secure provisional pole.

Behind the Toyota 1-2 was the #3 Rebellion Racing R13 Gibson, however the #17 SMP Racing BR Engineering BR1 AER holds third overall following its quicker lap yesterday.

In LMP2 Paul-Loup Chatin’s time of 3:24.956 remains the benchmark though the #48 finished ninth-quickest in qualifying two.

The Porsches have a stanglehold on the front-row of the GTE categories and were 1-2-3 in the GTE Pro category in Q2.

The third and final session has been extended by 30 minutes following the shortened Q2 session and will decide the final grid for the 86th running of the Le Mans 24 Hours.
