Formula 1 is heading in the right direction with its new rules package according to Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali – a former team boss at Ferrari.
Domenicali took up his new role as the boss of the Italian supercar company in 2016 after he was hired by parent company Audi following his departure from F1, where he held the position of team principal at Ferrari between 2008 and 2014.
Rumours of Volkswagen, Audi or Lamborghini – all of which come under the Volkswagen Automobile Group banner – entering the sport are well known and circulated on a yearly basis, however nothing has ever come of the rumours. But VW has been involved in discussions over F1's new power unit which is set to be introduced for the 2021 season alongside a raft of changes which will completely overhaul the sport.
Domenicali believes those changes are heading in the right direction, but says the next few months will be "crucial" for the sport.
"Formula 1 is in a very important phase of transformation in all relevant sectors, from the commercial one to the technical and sporting ones," he told Paddock Magazine.
"Liberty media, together with FIA, are trying to shape the future of the sport in order to give a strong and healthy direction for the next challenging years.
"I do believe that [the sport is heading] in the right direction and the choices that will be made in the next months will be crucial."
