Josh Caygill made a mistake at the final corner on his fastest lap en route to his first FIA World Endurance Championship LMGT3 pole position.

The #95 United Autosports driver claimed his first WEC pole position in LMGT3 by just 0.002 seconds ahead of his teammate.

In spite of this, he told media in the post-qualifying press conference about missing out on further qualifying pace potential.

“The tyres had gone, so we kind of had to play a little bit of a waiting game,” he said on being unable to attempt another lap.

“When he [his engineer] told me I was two-thousandths clear, I knew I’d given away quite a lot of time.

“I tried to push a little too hard and lost the rear [into the final corner].

“It was a good lap, I was happy with the lap.

“I lost a bit of time but it was just enough to get it.

“We’ve been working really hard on the on the race running so we never really [did a qualifying simulation in free practice].

“Overall, I’m happy so hopefully we’ll have a decent race car, we’ve worked a lot on tyres during the weekend.”

United Autosports commanded the final qualifying session of the 2024 season, ahead of the 8 Hours of Bahrain.

Caygill topped the Q1 session whereby drivers fought to make it through to Hyperpole by finishing in the top-10 order.

His #59 teammate James Cottingham set the pace between the pair of McLaren 720S LMGT3 EVOs during the early stages of LMGT3 Hyperpole.

Drivers were gradually building up momentum, pace and temperature in their cars as they fought for the final pole position.

Caygill, in spite of a small mistake at the final corner, narrowly claimed pole position.

Tomorrow’s eighth and final round will test drivers and teams primarily in tyre management throughout the third-longest race duration of the year.
