Stats: Power unit component usage ahead of the Canadian GP

The Canadian Grand Prix marks a third of the way through the 2018 Formula 1 calendar as round seven of 21 and is often the race where engine manufacturers will introduce an upgrade, given its long straights which are power hungry.

Renault, Honda and Ferrari have all confirmed they will have upgraded units available, although not every driver will take them. Mercedes meanwhile has delayed its upgrade due to a quality issue and it will now appear at the French GP.

Therefore it's time to take a detailed look at what power unit components each driver has used so far in the opening six rounds of the season ahead of this weekend's seventh round at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Turbo-charger (TC) and Motor Generator Unit-Heat (MGU-H) are limited to three per car per season, whilst the Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K), Energy Store (ES) and Control Electronics (CE) are limited to just two.

As you can see from the below table, there's a lot of red, which means a driver is on their final of that component. If it's red and bold, then a driver has exceeded their allocation – thus far, only Red Bull's Max Verstappen has gone over his allocation.

Should a driver go above their allocation, they face being handed a grid penalty of five or ten places depending on which unit they replace.

It's worth remembering that if a driver such as Verstappen were to take an upgraded power unit this weekend, they won't necessarily incur a penalty as Red Bull/Renault could opt not to change his MGU-K if it's condition is fine, therefore only replacing components that won't incur a penalty.
