Joan Mir led the combined timesheets in Moto2 on Friday ahead of the Italian Grand Prix by topping the second practice session ahead of Sam Lowes.

Marc VDS rider Mir has been at the centre of much speculation prior to this weekend regarding his future in MotoGP, with the Spaniard hotly linked to a seat at the factory Suzuki team next year.

Moto2 rookie Romano Fenati set the early pace in the first session of the Italian Grand Prix weekend on his Marinelli Snipers machine with a 1:54.627s.

Alex Marquez took over from the Italian moments later with a 1:53.277s, with the Marc VDS rider lowering that to a 1:52.515s by the end of the session.

CGBM Evolution KTM rider Lowes slotted into second behind the Spaniard, with Miguel Oliveira completing the top three on the Ajo KTM ahead of Mir and Lorenzo Baldassarri on the Pons Kalex.

Oliveira opened up FP2's running with a 1:53.617s to set the initial pace in the afternoon, but was soon beaten by last year's Mugello race winner Mattia Pasini, who fired in a 1:52.265s to go two tenths clear of the field.

As much of the field switched their focus to race runs, Pasini's benchmark stood for most of the session, until a flurry of time attacks in the closing stages put it under threat.

Mir just missed out on his first attempt, but sneaked ahead of the Italtrans rider with a 1:52.124s, with Lowes shadowing him in second.

Pramac Ducati-bound Francesco Bagnaia looked set to dethrone Mir's time on his final lap, but missed out in the final sector of the circuit and was forced to settle for third with a 1:52.237s.

Pasini found himself shuffled back to fourth as the dust settled on the session, while Baldassarri put himself fifth on the FP2 timesheets, though is sixth overall as Marquez's FP1-topping 1:52.515s keeps him fifth in the combined standings.

The top 10 on the combined times was completed by home favourites Fenati, Sky VR46's Luca Marini and Italtrans' Andrea Locatelli, while Frenchman Fabio Quartararo put his Speed Up machine into 10th.
