Mark Webber: Formula E is motorsport’s most-competitive single-seater series

Former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber believes that Formula E is the most competitive single-seater racing series in motorsport.

Now in its fourth season of competition after making its debut as a championship in 2014, Formula E has seen rapid growth in its popularity, with manufacturers including Nissan, Porsche and Mercedes set to join the series in the future while a number of big-name drivers have also joined its revolutionary outlook on racing, with Felipe Massa signing for Venturi for Season Five.

In three seasons, Formula E has seen three different champions, with Nelson Piquet Jr taking the crown in the series' inaugural campaign while Sebastien Buemi was the victor of Season Two. Lucas di Grassi is the reigning champion although this is set to change in Season Four with all three previous champions out of contention for this year's title.

"[Formula E] is obviously going places," Webber told Motorsport Week. "All of the big guys are coming and they’re all here and the standard of driving is obviously exceptional.

"The depth of drivers here is probably the most competitive championship we have on four wheels in terms of the depth of drivers if you like and how tight the competition is.

"It looks very very tight in terms of how competitive it is. You don’t know really who is going to win which is quite good."

In Season Four, Formula E has seen four different winners while 11 of the championship's 20 drivers have stood on the podium at least once in this present campaign while Formula 1 has not seen more than 10 podium finishers in one season since 2012.

Comparing the all-electric single seater series' early days to its current format, Webber described the championship as "unrecognisable":

"It’s going from strength to strength, I mean it’s unrecognisable from what it was two years ago compared to today and that’s going to be the same two years from now,” he added.

Formula E Season Four will continue in June where the series heads to Switzerland for the inaugural Zurich E-Prix.
