Red Bull has fitted a new MGU-K to Max Verstappen’s RB14 ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, in order to take advantage of his back-of-the-grid start position.
Verstappen, having been second quickest to team-mate Daniel Ricciardo throughout practice, crashed during the closing stages of the final session.
Red Bull attempted to repair his car in time for qualifying but detected an oil leak in the gearbox and was unable to undertake the required fixes.
Verstappen thus did not participate in qualifying and will line up at the rear of the 20-car grid.
Verstappen had already used his season-allocation of two MGU-Ks and Red Bull has taken the opportunity to exceed his limit and install a third, with the 10-place grid penalty having no impact.
It is the first time any driver has exceeded their allocation of engine components this season.
For 2018, drivers are permitted a combination of two or three of the six components that make up the power unit.
Team-mate Ricciardo will start from the front end of the grid on pole position.
