DAMS driver Alexander Albon has been handed a penalty for his role in the Formula 2 Feature Race clash involving himself and Nyck de Vries in Monaco.
Albon led away from pole position and was closely pursued by de Vries through the first stint, before the Safety Car was deployed when Lando Norris collided with Ralph Boschung.
Albon and de Vries both went to pit – but Albon cut across from the middle of the circuit and was tipped into a spin by de Vries, who had adopted the tight inside line.
The pair continued to circulate out of contention for a few laps but ultimately retired from a race that was won by Russian Time’s Artem Markelov.
Albon was deemed the guilty party in the collision and has been issued with a five-place grid penalty for Saturday’s Sprint Race – meaning he will start from last position.
The incident meant Albon missed out on a chance to challenge Lando Norris for the lead of the standings.
The Carlin driver extended his advantage to 17 points despite receiving a penalty for colliding with Boschung, eventually placing sixth, having started from 18th on the grid.
