Jakub Kornfeil explains ‘crazy’ 9.7-metre Le Mans race jump

Prustel GP KTM Moto3 rider Jakub Kornfeil says he jumped 9.7 metres in the air when he hit Enea Bastianini's stricken Honda in the closing stages of Sunday's French Grand Prix.

Kornfeil was running in the lead group when Leopard rider Bastianini crashed in front of him at the final corner on the penultimate lap.

The Czech rider had no where to go and ran over Bastianini's bike, launching almost 10 metres in the air before landing and carrying on to finish sixth.

In an interview with motogp.com, Kornfeil says his only thought was to “open the gas and try to survive”, while revealing the impact with Bastianini's bike set off the airbag in his leathers.

“Well, during the race I was not thinking about it,” he said.

“I just saw the bike in front of me like this [at an angle] so I could make the jump, and I just say 'Ok, it's just like the motorcross training, so just open the gas and try to in the air survive and stay on the bike'.

“When I landed, it was very soft into the stones and I don't feel anything. The problem a little bit was, when I was in the air, my airbag exploded open, and this made me a little bit uncomfortable.

“When I landed I somehow saved it. I don't know how, I just stayed on the gas. In my mind was going only one sentence, 'Keep the gas', because I know you land in motorcross you always need to have throttle.

“This I did, and I saved it and I am very, very happy. The only problem was not the balls, but my penis hurt a lot in the last lap.

“Immediately at the finish line open the leather suit, I give my chest protector to the marshals on the finish straight, and I tried to stretch a little bit. So this was a little bit the problem.

“After the race, when I saw the video, I was like crazy, especially the pictures, the greatest.”

He added that the data from KTM's engineers revealed he had jumped 9.7 metres in the air, and broke his seat unit in the landing.

“We checked the data very carefully, especially the KTM engineers in the KTM truck from the factory.

“They bring us a lot of data and they say my shock was faster than on a motorcross bike, and in motorcross thy are using a really fast shock because it must absorb the bumps really well.

“So my speed was even faster than they are using in motorcross. For the distance, I jumped 9.7 or 9.6 metres, so almost 10 metres, so it's quite long.

“My rear suspension was fully down, completely down, and I broke the seat. We are using a carbon fibre seat, it's just one piece, there is no metal, we are using full carbon and this I broke.”
