Red Bull’s Max Verstappen posted the quickest time in Tuesday's opening day of Formula 1 in-season testing in Spain.

Formula 1 has stayed on at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for two days of post-race running, with all 10 teams in attendance.

Tuesday’s running took place in warm and dry conditions, with just one red-flag period, caused by Sauber’s Antonio Giovinazzi in the final 15 minutes.

Verstappen’s time of 1:17.528, set on the Hypersofts, came during the final hour of action as he jumped ahead of ex-team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr. by just 0.034s, the Spaniard having also used Pirelli's pink-banded rubber.

Sebastian Vettel used Softs to go third for Ferrari, while morning pacesetter Romain Grosjean was shuffled down to fourth by the conclusion of the day’s proceedings.

Nicholas Latifi got his first taste of Force India’s VJM11 as he placed fifth, in front of World Champion Lewis Hamilton, the most productive driver with 151 laps completed, and McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne.

Hamilton trialled a modified rain-light system on the rear of his Mercedes W09, with three lights flashing instead of one.

Giovinazzi got behind the wheel of Sauber’s C37 for the first time and classified in eighth position, ahead of his stint in Ferrari’s SF71H on Wednesday.

Oliver Rowland made his official test bow with Williams and put the FW41 into ninth place, ahead of F2 points leader Lando Norris (McLaren) and George Russell (Force India), who conducted tyre testing duties on behalf of Pirelli.

Sean Gelael’s stint in the Toro Rosso was interrupted by a power unit change, caused by a chassis-related issue, but he returned to the circuit for the final stages and placed 12th.

Long-time McLaren simulator driver Oliver Turvey took over the Pirelli-run MCL33 from Norris for the afternoon and finished at the foot of the 13-driver table.

Wednesday’s running will take place from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00.
