George Russell reigns in Barcelona with F2 Feature Race win

George Russell took a dominant victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, securing a second consecutive win for ART Grand Prix.

For the 37-lap Feature Race, Russell started from fourth on the grid but jumped into second place by the end of the first lap, overtaking polesitter Alexander Albon who had a poor start for DAMS and Campos Racing's Luca Ghiotto.

After the deployment of a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) for the stricken Arden of Maximilian Gunther, on-track proceedings were momentarily paused before the green flag waved on lap 4, with Mercedes junior Russell quickly overtaking Nyck de Vries for the lead on lap 6 before a second VSC was deployed on the same lap after Ralph Boschung came to blows with his MP Motorsport team-mate Roberto Merhi.

After throwing a broken drinks bottle out of his ART machine, Russell was under investigation by the race stewards but maintained his lead until lap 25 when he pitted for a set of medium tyres, handing the lead to Artem Markelov who had not yet pitted for Russian Time.

The racing action was paused for the fourth time on lap 28 when another Virtual Safety Car was deployed, this time because of an incident between Sean Gelael and Louis Deletraz after the pair made contact in Turn 1 whilst running side-by-side.

Due to the stop-start nature of the race, it was clear that it would be governed by time as opposed to distance, and when the green flag waved on lap 32, the field of 14 remaining runners had five minutes to battle it out on track.

Holding off a hard-charging de Vries who attempted to snatch first with a diving move in Turn 5, Russell took the chequered flag to secure a second Formula 2 victory this season, with de Vries settling for second while championship leader Lando Norris stood on the final step of the podium for series newcomers Carlin.

Ghiotto finished in fourth place for Campos to secure his highest finishing position of the 2018 season while Albon crossed the line in fifth as the highest placed DAMS driver.

Jack Aitken secured sixth place in the second ART Grand Prix entry and was followed by Sergio Sette Camara who was seventh.

Despite starting from the back of the field, Russian Time's Markelov finished in eighth to secure reverse grid pole for Sunday's Sprint Race and was followed by his team-mate, Tadasuke Makino, who took two points away from the race with ninth.

Antonio Fuoco completed the top 10 for Charouz.

Outside of the top 10 finishers, only four other drivers saw the chequered flag, with Gelael, Deletraz, Arjun Maini, Boschung, Gunther and Santino Ferrucci failing to finish the race.
