Robert Kubica made his return to an official Formula 1 session on Friday during first free practice at the helm of the Williams FW41. Though things didn't go quite to plan as the Pole spun during the session and described the car as "nearly impossible" to drive, though he was quicker than Lance Stroll by 1.3 seconds.
It was certainly the day for spins as the new track surface and warmer temperatures caught a number of drivers out including Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas. The Finn did however go on to top FP1 and was fifth quickest in FP2.
As well as being the day for spins, it was also the day for upgrades! McLaren unveiled its new front-wing and nose package with a rather radical look. Fernando Alonso gave some positive feedback following the two practice sessions, calling it a "step forward".

Daniel Ricciardo was another driver to suffer a mishap, however his was a little more serious as he impacted the wall, albeit at a fairly low speed. The Australian blamed it on a "big tailwind".
Too close! Daniel Ricciardo hit the tyre wall at Turn 4. Here he can be seen climbing out of his Red Bull RB14. The incident caused a red flag as his stricken and damaged car was recovered by the Spanish marshals.
Another car in need of some recovery assistance was that of Lance Stroll who also went off in FP1. The Canadian did however manage to narrowly avoid the barriers, but that was it for him during the session.
It isn't Spain without a festival atmosphere. A band played in the paddock opposite Heineken's free paddock bar, both of which put a smile on the face of those visiting for the day…or weekend!

Another one… This time it was Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley who found the gravel as the slippery track and tailwind caught out almost everyone at one stage on Friday.
A new smoother surface doesn't mean the sparks have disappeared. Max Verstappen can be seen kicking up some during his run to third in second practice, where he finished just under three-tenths off Lewis Hamilton.
Last but not least, Romain Grosjean in his Haas opted for some sight-seeing, clearly bored of the smooth track surface, he went with the bumpy gravel trap during one of his laps.
