Lewis Hamilton tops opening Chinese GP practice session

Lewis Hamilton topped first practice for the Chinese Grand Prix with a best time of 1:33.999 as the only man to dip below the 1:34 mark.

The session took place in dry conditions despite rain being forecast as a high possibility. Strong wings did however cause some problems as drivers struggled at certain corners, Turns 11 and 16 in particular. A tailwind down the start/finish straight upset the rear on entry, causing some cars to slide around.

Hamilton immediately went quickest on his opening run and sat at the rop of the timing screens as he lowered his benchmark throughout the 90-minute session.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen split the two Mercedes cars in second with a 1:34.358, putting the Finn almost four-tenths down on Hamilton who is hunting his first win of the season at what many would consider his circuit, having won here five times.

Daniel Ricciardo was fourth for Red Bull ahead of his team-mate Max Verstappen, whilst Sebastian Vettel closed out a predictable top six.

Kevin Magnussen was 'best of the rest' behind the top three teams in sixth for Haas, with 1.1 seconds splitting him and leader Hamilton, though the gap to Vettel was just three-tenths.

Renault's Carlos Sainz, Romain Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg closed out the top 10 in the session.

Lance Stroll was slowest, more than three seconds down, as Williams' struggles continue.

The session was drama free other than a few wide runs due to the wind, with McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne skipping across the gravel and narrowly avoiding the tyre barrier at one point.
