McLaren’s Jonathan Neale has promised that the Woking team will continue developing the current MP4-25 until the very end of the season, if the table remains as close as it currently is.
Just eight points separate Red Bull and McLaren, with the Ferrari team a further 66 points behind – a gap which can easily be eradicated under the new points system.
During a McLaren-Mercedes phone-in, the managing director said he had expected a tight development race from the very beginning of the season.
“It’s a very close championship at this stage. It will be a straight development race, as we knew it would be at the beginning of the year.”
He continued: “With a number of drivers being very close. It depends on what we can invent between now and then. We will be expecting upgrade packages for Singapore and beyond,” he confirmed.
With a handful of teams already turning their attention to 2011, namely Mercedes, Neale says his team will continue to focus on the current season as long as the gap remains realistic.
“I suspect it will be one of those long development races and we will, if we are as close as we are at this stage, be expecting to take an upgrade package to the last race.”
