FIA tightens WRC Power Stage rules for Corsica

The FIA has confirmed new tighter rules for the World Rally Championship's 'Power Stage' after teams were taking advantage of the rules and trying to gain a tactical advantage.

During the previous two rounds, some teams delayed checking into the Power Stage in an effort to start later and therefore further down the running order, which meant they would gain from improved grip, with those ahead clearing any gravel/snow and laying additional rubber.

This also had an impact on safety according to the FIA, which explained that the gaps between competitors had shrunk in order to fit late-comers in.

A World Motor Sport Council vote took place this week and received support to tighten the rules, meaning any team checking in late would forfeit their points from the final stage.

"Following an e-vote by the World Motor Sport Council, competitors who do not start the Power Stage in the given order will not be eligible for Power Stage points as per Article 5.3.2 of the FIA WRC Sporting Regulations," read a release.

"This will take place with immediate effect for safety reasons.

"The amendment to the Regulations will help avoid intentional late check-in which increases the gaps between competitors, help minimise the movement of spectators when no cars are running, and prevent behaviour aimed at circumventing the start order of the Power Stage."
