Whitmarsh: We must be creative to win the title

McLaren must look at being more creative in its development process if it’s to win the championship, team principal, Martin Whitmarsh admits.

The British team has led the championship for much of the season thanks to its straight-line speed advantage, however that advantage has now been eroded as its competitors have developed their own F-ducts – a McLaren innovation.

At the last race in Hungary, McLaren lost the lead in both championships to Mark Webber and his team, Red Bull. Despite the clear speed advantage of the Milton Keynes based car, the Woking squad are just eight points behind.

Recent developments from the team have included their own rear-blown diffuser which the team are still working on perfecting.

“We have not suspended the diffuser project, but we hope to invent something new,” Whitmarsh told Autosprint magazine (via F1SA).

The ongoing flexi-wing controversy is an area McLaren believe they can take a creative approach to, once the FIA has declared its stance at the Belgium GP.

“The FIA needs to make this area absolutely clear,” he said of the front-wings.

“If clarity does not come, we too can become very inventive and creative.”
