The new FIA Formula 3 Championship will be run by the Formula 1 Group

The top story coming out of today’s World Motorsport Council (WMSC) in Geneva this afternoon is the announcement that the Formula One Group has been selected by the FIA as the promoter for the new FIA Formula 3 Championship, which will begin in 2019.

Formula 3 will now be a feature of the F1 grand prix platform and an all-new car, with a single supplier for chassis, engines, and tyres to be selected by the FIA in collaboration with FOM will debut next year.

The announcement clears the way for a three step single seater route to Formula 1 for young drivers in the newly sanctioned FIA Formula 3 Championship which takes the place of the current GP3 Series run along similar lines.

Having the top three FIA single-seat series running together at the same events should make it easier for young talented drivers to plan their careers and attract more backing in their quest to get onto the F1 grid as it has already been shown to help young MotoGP riders who, for some time, have had the Moto3 and Moto2 steps to the MotoGP grid.

A maximum 30 entries will be accepted, with the new FIA F3 Championship planned to run between nine and ten events, with two races per event.

The new car will integrate the latest FIA safety technologies, including increased chassis strength, increased cockpit rim height and strength that will be the same standard as found in Formula 1 cars plus of course featuring the Halo. The new chassis will be the first to also feature a frontal anti-intrusion panel!

Cost control within the new championship will be key and there will be limited, regulated testing, as well as limitations on trackside personnel and the use of electronics and sensors.
