McLaren-backed Lando Norris targeting F2 title in rookie year

McLaren protégé Lando Norris has revealed that he is targeting the Formula 2 championship title when he joins the F1 feeder series in 2018.

Norris won the European Formula 3 Championship in 2017 with Carlin and rejoins the Surrey-based outfit for this year, where he will race alongside Sergio Sette Camara.

"A title would be nice," said Norris when asked about his ambitions for the 2018 season. "I think it's going to be a very big challenge.

"Going with Carlin is a bit of a risk, especially because they didn't do it [compete] last year so they're a bit behind what other teams are. But I think I can put confidence in them like I did last year to try and win the [Formula 3] championship.

"On top of that, I'll try and have some wins and learn as much as I can basically," he added.

In 2018, Norris faces stiff opposition in Formula 2 with GP3 champion George Russell and Renault Academy driver Jack Aitken racing for ART Grand Prix, while Nirei Fukuzumi joins Arden International.

Alexander Albon is expected to switch to DAMS, joining the experienced Nicholas Latifi, while fellow McLaren youngster Nyck de Vries has linked up with Prema.

"I'm very excited [for 2018]. Like I said, it's a big challenge what's going to be coming up and I think that's one of the few things I like about racing.

"It's going to be tough. I have a lot of new opportunities especially with McLaren so I'll try and make the most of them and I get to travel a lot as well which is a better job than what most people have so, all of that put together, is going to make for a very exciting year."

This season sees the introduction of the new F2 2018 car which replaces the GP2-11, having been designed to have a greater resemblance to current spec Formula 1 machinery, with wider and more aggressive styling and a new 3.4-litre turbocharged Mechachrome engine.
