Max Verstappen posts Instagram apology after FIA outburst

Max Verstappen has posted an apology on Instagram following his United States Grand Prix outburst, in which he described the stewards, or one in particular, an "idiot" after he was penalised for a last-lap pass on Kimi Raikkonen.

Verstappen would have finished on the podium without the addition of a five-second time penalty, but the stewards deemed he had cut the corner and gained a "lasting advantage".

Speaking after the race, Verstappen said: "It's one idiot steward up there who always makes decisions against me. At the end of the day, everybody is running wide everywhere, there are no track limits."

The FIA's Charlie Whiting on Thursday said he hoped the Red Bull driver would issue an apology for his remark, which Verstappen has now done via an Instagram post.

"Further to what I said during the FIA press conference earlier today, I would once again apologise for the language that I used following the US Grand Prix.

"My comments were made in the heat of the moment, I know that the words I used were inappropriate and they were not directed at any one person.

"I certainly did not mean to cause any offence and I hope we can move on and enjoy this race weekend."
