Pierre Gasly says he “feels sorry” for Daniil Kvyat, after replacing the Russian at Toro Rosso for the next two Grands Prix.
Gasly will make his F1 bow in Malaysia this weekend, and will remain in the STR12 in Japan, though Toro Rosso’s intentions for the remainder of the season have not yet been determined.
Gasly described Kvyat, who has scored just four points this season, as “talented” and is sure that he will be back on the grid in the future.
“I didn’t have the chance to talk with him yet,” said Gasly.
“Unfortunately, that’s how it works in this sport. He’s been in my position, before he came to F1, waiting for his chance, and then he had to take the seat of someone else.
“Of course, I feel sorry for him. I think he’s a really good driver, talented.
“Unfortunately, it’s happening that I’m going to take his seat, but I’m pretty sure we’ll see him back on the grid at some point.”
Carlos Sainz Jr., who has been Kvyat’s team-mate since mid-2016, commented that he is focusing on himself, rather than the plight of the two-time podium finisher.
“Let’s say that in the middle of a season when you are so focused on your driving, you cannot really be affected by what goes on in the other side of the garage,” he said.
“I’ve switched team-mates in Formula 1 a few times now, and I’ve remained focused on my own job, trying not to think what goes on on the other side.
“Also because with Red Bull is just works like that, and you need to be ready for that.
“I haven’t had a chance to speak with Daniil yet, because I have been focused on this weekend, but I’m sure I will.”
