Red Bull owner, Dietrich Mateschitz, has reaffirmed that his team does not deploy a number one and two driver system.
The Austrian billionaire replied to a question put forward by the Kleine Zeitung publication, which asked why his team didn’t elect a number one driver.
“This philosophy does not match my understanding of racing,” he replied. “There is no programmable champion. Our two pilots know that you have to beat a) the other and b) they still need each other to take away as many points from the competition.”
When asked specifically about the situation in Silverstone which saw Mark Webber stripped of his updated front-wing, he highlighted that under the unique circumstances, it was a one-off.
“We have no number one or number two. Both drivers have cars of exactly the same standard, the problem with the new wing at Silverstone was the first exception.”
Mateschitz added it wasn’t right for the team to interfere over the radio during the race, as this is where the problems begin.
“If you ask me today who will be champion, I say one of our two drivers. But the pits must not interfere, because then the problems begin in earnest.”
