McLaren youngster Lando Norris takes sixth F3 win at Zandvoort

McLaren protégé Lando Norris claimed a dominant victory in the opening race of the European Formula 3 round at Zandvoort, surviving a brief scare at the restart.

Norris surged away from pole position at the Dutch venue but proceedings were neutralised after a Turn 1 crash involving Guan Yu Zhou, Ralf Aron and David Beckmann.

Zhou dived up the inside of Aron but the pair made contact, with the Estonian sent into the path of Beckmann, who spun and flipped into the gravel.

Beckmann was uninjured in the incident, but the Safety Car – and medical team – was deployed.

Second-placed Joel Eriksson remained hooked onto the rear of Norris’ Carlin at the restart, forcing the Briton to hug the inside line in order to keep his opponent at bay, which he successfully managed.

From there, Norris quickly opened an advantage and cruised clear across the remaining laps to comfortably rack up his sixth victory of the campaign, and Carlin's sixth successive win, 8.9s in front of Eriksson.

Prema’s Maximilian Gunther, sporting a revised BWT-inspired livery, rounded out the podium positions, and held on to his championship lead.

Ferdinand Habsburg bogged down from a front-row grid spot and slipped to fifth, but overhauled Callum Ilott to grab fourth place, and resisted the Briton’s advances throughout.

Mick Schumacher took sixth position, in front of Pedro Piquet and Jake Hughes, while Jehan Daruvala and Harrison Newey rounded out the top 10.
