Sebastien Bourdais has been given the all clear to make a return to IndyCar racing, after a final check-up by medical chiefs.
The French driver sustained fractures to his pelvis and right hip in a high-speed accident during qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 in May.
The Dale Coyne Racing driver looked set to be ruled out for the rest of the 2017 IndyCar season, but he has made a quicker recovery than expected.
Bourdais recently returned to the wheel of a car, completing an IndyCar test at Mid-Ohio and managing 80 laps over the course of the day.
He was evaluated by IndyCar’s orthopaedic consultant on Tuesday in Indianapolis and was given clearance to make a racing return.
It has yet to be confirmed when Bourdais will return to racing, with four rounds remaining in the 2017 season.
Bourdais was replaced by James Davison for the Indy 500, with ex-F1 racer Esteban Gutierrez and Tristan Vautier stepping into the No.18 car while he has recovered.
